Deron Williams catches up with his former Illini teammate and current Kansas assistant coach, Jerrance Howard in Episode 25 of the Ballers and Brawlers podcast. Howard and the Jayhawks are in the midst of a deep run in the NCAA Tournament and hope to capture a national championship when it’s all over, but first, he joins the show to reminisce with Deron.

The two former teammates discuss Deron’s recruitment to Illinois, their most memorable experiences from their time together in college, and their former head coach and current Kansas head coach, the legendary Bill Self.

They discuss Self’s tough coaching style and Deron’s thoughts of transferring from Illinois after Self left the program following his freshman season.

Illinois basketball reached its peak during Williams’ time at the university, and this episode of Ballers and Brawlers gives a look back into those years. Howard and Williams recount the countless times their weekend plans were often cancelled at the last minute because someone would be challenged to a game of one-on-one.

Other topics covered in the episode include the FBI investigation that is swirling around college basketball this season, Kansas’ “Boot Camp” training regimen that Howard and Williams say is the hardest thing they had to do at Illinois, and Bill Self makes a surprise appearance on the podcast.

Deron also discusses his most recent trip back to campus and how it has changed since his time there.
